Planning your visit
Spring and fall (roughly April–June and September–November) are Seoul's sweet spot, especially October for clear skies and foliage around the palaces; summer brings the jangma monsoon in late June and July followed by a hot, humid August, so it's worth building in some rain-day flexibility. The five grand palaces and Bukchon Hanok Village sit close together in central Jongno and are easy to string together on foot in a single day, while big draws like Lotte World Tower in Jamsil or N Seoul Tower on Namsan sit apart and need a subway ride to reach. Regular daytime palace visits don't require advance booking — you just buy at the gate — but the seasonal night 'moonlight' tours do, and those tickets can sell out within hours of release. A citywide sightseeing pass generally only pays off if you build a tight itinerary around several paid attractions in one burst; it's easy to skip if your trip leans more toward shopping and food.
