Gaudí's unfinished basilica, begun in 1882. In 2026 the Tower of Jesus Christ was topped out at 172.5 m, making it the tallest church in the world. Go late afternoon and the west windows turn the nave orange and red.

A failed luxury housing estate that became Gaudí's mosaic playground: the tiled dragon, the hypostyle hall and the serpentine bench looking out over the whole city. It is a steep uphill walk from the metro.

A market on this spot since 1217, under a wrought-iron roof off La Rambla. The stalls at the front are priced for tourists; walk to the back for the fish counters and the tiny bars where market workers eat.

Built for the 1929 International Exposition, the fountain runs choreographed water, light and music shows below the national art museum. The shows are cancelled outright during drought restrictions.
