Transit card guide

Ho Chi Minh City's first and only metro line, Ben Thanh–Suoi Tien, only opened in December 2024, so it connects the center to the eastern suburbs rather than forming a citywide network, and most classic District 1 sights are still easier to reach on foot, by Grab, or by taxi. There's no dedicated rechargeable smart card for tourists yet — payment runs through QR codes, a tap of a contactless bank card, the HCMC Metro app, or cash at the machine, with a proper commuter smart card not expected until around mid-2026. If your day happens to run along that single line, the unlimited day ticket is a fair deal for more than a couple of rides, but for the city as a whole, Grab and walking remain the realistic default.
