Saigon's most iconic market, its clock-tower gate marking the western edge of District 1 — a maze of stalls selling everything from clothing and souvenirs to fresh produce and street food, spilling into a night market on the surrounding streets after dark.

The backpacker-district nightlife strip in the Pham Ngu Lao area, closed to traffic on weekend nights — bars, street-side beer stools, live music spilling onto the pavement, and a younger, rowdier energy than the rest of District 1.

Spanning District 5 and part of District 6, Cho Lon is one of the largest Chinatowns in the world — Cantonese- and Teochew-influenced temples, herbal medicine shops, and Binh Tay Market's wholesale bustle, distinctly different in pace and architecture from District 1.

The compact colonial-era core of the city — Notre-Dame Cathedral, the Central Post Office, the Opera House, and Nguyen Hue/Dong Khoi's boulevards are all within a 20-minute walk of each other, making District 1 the single most walkable introduction to Saigon.

From sidewalk pho stalls to plastic-stool banh mi carts and after-dark grilled-skewer alleys, Saigon's street food scene is dense enough that entire neighborhoods can be explored purely by what's cooking on the curb — usually cheaper and just as good as sit-down restaurants.
