Practical tips
Taipei has three main options — 55688 (Taiwan Taxi), the dominant dispatch service bookable by app or phone call; LINE Taxi, handy if you're already using the LINE app; and Uber, which many English-speaking visitors find easiest since the fare and destination are set upfront in English, even though it tends to run a bit pricier than a metered cab at busy times. Street-hailing is still completely normal and easy in Taipei — cabs are plentiful around the clock — so there's rarely a need to wait on an app unless you specifically want the fixed price or English interface. At Taoyuan Airport, English-speaking staff at the taxi counter will take your hotel name and relay it to a driver for you, or you can walk straight to the curbside taxi queue yourself. Not every street-hailed cab reliably takes cards and not every driver reads English, so it's worth having your destination as Chinese text on your phone and some cash as backup; tipping isn't expected either way, though rounding up is a well-understood, appreciated gesture, especially if a driver helps with your bags.
