Food culture
Taipei's real breakfast culture happens at zaocan dian, small morning-only shops open roughly 6 to 11am, making dan bing and fresh-ground soy milk to order — not at the night markets tourists tend to associate with the city's food scene. Night markets are actually closer to a snack crawl, with small plates for a few dollars each, while a sit-down bowl of beef noodle soup at a proper shop costs several times more, and at the extreme end a handful of restaurants push the price up further with wagyu or imported beef that has nothing to do with the night-market version. Convenience stores here are also unusually well integrated into daily eating, with fresh tea eggs, hot food counters, and a real hot meal treated as a normal lunch option rather than a last resort, and tipping isn't expected anywhere on this list.
