Hair Transplant Prices
Real official package prices from Istanbul hair transplant clinics popular with international patients.
What to know before you book
Who actually performs the procedure
The International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) has published a consumer warning specifically about medical-tourism hair transplants being performed by technicians rather than licensed physicians, noting this creates risk of misdiagnosing underlying hair-loss or systemic conditions and unsafe handling of anesthesia/medication during surgery.

A fast-growing, loosely regulated market
NPR reported in October 2025 that Istanbul draws large numbers of foreign patients partly on cost — one patient's actual paid total was about $3,400 all-in (travel, lodging, and procedure) versus a $13,000+ quote for a comparable U.S. procedure — while quoting an Istanbul clinic director describing the industry as having a 'Wild West atmosphere.' A UK-based psychologist quoted in the same article raised concerns about excessive graft harvesting and patients being pressured into treatment without full informed consent.

A documented case, under investigation
On 29 July 2025, a 38-year-old British man, Martyn Latchman, died after becoming unwell while being prepared for a second hair-transplant procedure at Dr. Cinik Clinic in Istanbul; he was taken to hospital and died the same day. Turkish police opened an investigation reported by multiple outlets as examining possible 'reckless homicide,' and the Istanbul Provincial Health Directorate opened its own inquiry. This is one specific, named, multiply-reported case under active investigation, not a statistic about typical procedure risk — it's included here as exactly that: a documented case, not a representative outcome.

What to verify before booking
Confirm in writing whether the person performing extraction and implantation — not just the initial consultation — is a licensed physician. Ask about the clinic's actual Ministry of Health facility licensing (Turkey's dedicated hair-transplant-center registry is at sacekimmerkezi.saglik.gov.tr — check it directly rather than taking a clinic's word for it). Get an individualized graft-count plan based on an in-person or video donor-area assessment, not a pre-set number quoted before any exam. Get exactly what's included/excluded in writing, and — importantly for a medical procedure — ask what happens and who is reachable if something goes wrong after you've flown home.
Synthesized from American Board of Cosmetic Surgery (Feb 2025 patient guidance) and ISHRS consumer materials.
For balance: one traveler's positive account
A named blogger, Jake Claver, published a first-person account (2 July 2024) of a DHI hair transplant at Estemark Clinic in Istanbul — a clinic not otherwise featured on this page. He describes the staff as professional and reassuring, local anesthesia as effective, and next-day aftercare as well-supervised, and frames the trip positively overall. He does not mention price. This is one person's account of one clinic, not a verified review or a representative outcome — included here alongside the risk information above for balance, not as a recommendation.

Procedure methods
FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction)
Individual hair follicles are extracted one at a time from the donor area using a small punch, then implanted into recipient sites. It heals faster than the older strip method (FUT) and leaves no linear scar, but has a higher follicle-transection rate and takes longer.
Source: Dua A, Dua K. 'Follicular Unit Extraction Hair Transplant,' Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery, 2010.
DHI (Direct Hair Implantation)
A variant of FUE where extraction is identical, but implantation uses a hollow-needle 'implanter pen' that creates the recipient site and places the graft in one motion, instead of pre-making channels and placing grafts with forceps. Heavily used as a marketing term in this industry — it is not a technique category with its own dedicated safety/recovery profile distinct from FUE.
Extraction method same as FUE (Dua & Dua, 2010); the implanter-pen detail is reported via secondary/industry sources, not independently confirmed against a primary medical-society citation.
Sapphire FUE
Not a separate extraction technique — it's standard FUE where recipient-site incisions are made with sapphire-tipped blades instead of steel ones, creating narrower incisions some sources describe as less traumatic. Blade material is estimated to account for a modest share of the outcome, with surgeon skill accounting for the rest — treat 'Sapphire' as a real but secondary detail, not a guarantee of better results.

Şişli
Şişli, on the European side, is Istanbul's best-documented hair-transplant clinic cluster and home to some of the most internationally recognized names — but not every major clinic is there; the industry is spread across many Istanbul districts on both the European and Asian sides.
- •Turkey's Health Tourism Association reported roughly 1 million people traveled to Turkey for hair transplants in 2022, accounting for about half of the country's $4 billion health-tourism revenue that year — an industry-association figure, not a government statistic, and now several years old.
- •Clinic-count figures for this district and for Istanbul overall vary wildly across sources — anywhere from roughly 200 to several thousand — with no authoritative government census. FairFare isn't publishing a specific number; the inconsistency itself is a sign of how hard this fast-growing market is to regulate.
- •Not every well-known clinic is in Şişli — several of the clinics researched for this page operate in Kadıköy, Eyüpsultan, and Ümraniye on the Asian side, and in Kartal, so a single-neighborhood recommendation would overstate how concentrated this industry really is.
