Transit card guide

Bangkok effectively runs two separate systems: the BTS Skytrain uses its own rechargeable Rabbit Card, bought and topped up with a passport at BTS station counters, while the MRT subway (Blue and Purple Lines) runs on a completely different stored-value card or single tokens that a Rabbit Card can't be used on. A unified Mangmoom Card has been rolling out across MRT, the Airport Rail Link, and more, but it's currently limited to Thai ID holders, so despite the marketing it isn't really an option for visitors. In practice, tapping a foreign contactless Visa or Mastercard directly at both BTS and MRT gates is now the simplest route for tourists, and it's worth knowing there's no shared day pass or transfer discount between the two networks — full ticket integration isn't expected until around 2027.
