Planning your visit

Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) are Tokyo's best sightseeing weather, while Golden Week in late April and early May brings huge domestic crowds and spiking hotel prices, and the tsuyu rainy season through late May and June is worth planning around with indoor backup options. A growing share of Tokyo's most in-demand attractions — teamLab's digital art museums, Skytree's observation decks, the Ghibli Museum — now run on timed online tickets rather than walk-up entry, so booking a date and time slot ahead has become the norm rather than the exception. The city itself isn't one walkable core but a set of separate neighborhood hubs — Asakusa, Shibuya, Ueno, and so on — linked by train, each easy to explore on foot once you're there but requiring a ride to get between them. A museum-and-gallery pass like the Grutto Pass only pays off if you're genuinely working through a long list of museums; for a more typical mixed itinerary, it's easy to skip.
