Planning your visit

Osaka is most pleasant in spring (roughly April–May, cherry-blossom season) and autumn (October–November), while June's rainy season and the hot, humid, typhoon-prone stretch from July into September are the periods to plan around. Its best-known sights are unusually walkable and clustered together — Dotonbori, Shinsekai, and Namba sit within one compact downtown core — with Osaka Castle a little further out but still an easy subway hop, and Kyoto is only about a 13-minute shinkansen ride away and makes an obvious day trip, though Kyoto's own temples are spread out enough that pairing both cities in a single day means a lot of it goes to transit rather than sightseeing. The Osaka Amazing Pass, which bundles unlimited subway and bus travel with free entry to Osaka Castle and dozens of other sights, is one of the rarer sightseeing passes that reliably pays for itself if you're hitting even a handful of paid attractions plus several rides in a day.
