Transit card guide
Kyoto doesn't have its own IC card — visitors just use ICOCA, Suica, or any other nationwide IC card interchangeably on both the city bus network and the subway. The city scrapped its famous all-day bus pass in 2024 as part of a push to ease overtourism on its most crowded routes, replacing it with a combined subway-and-bus one-day pass instead, and either kind of pass is worth it only if you're taking several rides, since Kyoto is now actively steering visitors toward the roomier subway over packed buses. One quirk that catches people out: on Kyoto's flat-fare city buses you don't tap at all when boarding, only once when you get off near the driver — the reverse of what many tourists expect — while buses running outside the flat-fare zone require a tap both ways.
