Transit card guide

Fukuoka technically has three local IC cards — SUGOCA from JR Kyushu, nimoca from Nishitetsu, and Hayakaken from the city subway — but tourists don't need to worry about picking the "right" one, since all three, along with Suica, ICOCA, and the rest of Japan's ten mutually compatible cards, work interchangeably on the subway, Nishitetsu trains and buses, and JR lines around the city. Any of them can be bought or topped up at station machines, convenience stores, or the airport. Fukuoka also sells a Tourist City Pass exclusively to short-term foreign visitors — passport required at purchase, sold at bus terminals and subway service counters rather than convenience stores — covering unlimited subway, Nishitetsu/Showa bus, and JR/Nishitetsu train rides for a day; it's worth it if you're covering a lot of ground or adding a Dazaifu side trip, but Fukuoka's compact core sightseeing area means plenty of visitors get by fine on just a lightly loaded IC card.
