Fukuoka is at its best in spring, when cherry blossoms hit Ohori and Maizuru parks in late March and early April, and again in autumn from October into November, when humidity drops and the leaves turn; the muggy, typhoon-prone summer is the stretch to avoid. Unlike Kyoto or Tokyo, most of Fukuoka's central sights — Fukuoka Tower, Ohori Park, Canal City, the Hakata district — sit close enough together to cover on foot or with a short subway hop, with the clear exception of Dazaifu's Tenmangu shrine, a genuine day trip out of the city on the Nishitetsu line. The Fukuoka Tourist City Pass, sold only to foreign visitors and available with or without that Dazaifu train ride included, functions less as an attractions pass and more as a transit pass that happens to bundle in a few discounted sights — it pays for itself after just a handful of rides, making it one of the more straightforwardly useful city passes around.
