Transit card guide

Mumbai's suburban local trains, more than the newer metro lines, are still how most of the city actually moves, and tickets or season passes can be bought at any station counter or through the railway's UTS mobile app, which lets you skip the ticket line by booking straight from your phone. For a short visit, paying per ride is simpler than committing to a season pass, though single-day and short-term tourist passes do exist for people planning to hop on and off constantly. What catches first-timers off guard is the compartment system: every train has a women-only "ladies" compartment marked in yellow that solo female travelers are expected to use, plus separate first-class coaches — unreserved but pricier, and still not air-conditioned on most trains — that run far less crowded than the general second-class cars.
