Transit card guide
Every rider in Madrid needs a Tarjeta Multi, the rechargeable card that Metro de Madrid requires even for single tickets — buy one at the ticket machines in any station (look for the red "Tarjeta MULTI" sticker) and load it with cash or a bank card. For a short stay, loading a Tourist Travel Pass onto that same card is genuinely convenient, since it's sold in blocks of several days with the card fee already bundled in, so you never have to stop and top up mid-trip. It's also the easiest way around the separate airport supplement charged on journeys to or from Barajas — pay-per-ride travelers get that extra charge added every time they pass through an airport station, but Tourist Pass and monthly-pass holders don't.
