Transit card guide

Hanoi doesn't yet have a metro system tourists can realistically plan a day around — the Cat Linh–Ha Dong line and the newer, partial Nhon–Cau Giay line each cover only a narrow corridor and miss most of the Old Quarter and lakeside sights visitors actually want to see. In practice, almost everyone gets around by the Grab app for motorbike or car rides (upfront pricing, no haggling), on foot within the compact Old Quarter, or on Hanoi's extensive and very cheap public bus network — there's no rechargeable transit card in the mix, since metro rides are single paper or token tickets and buses are paid in cash on board. If you do ride the metro along its short route, treat it as a one-off rather than a core part of your itinerary.
