Common Tourist Scams in Turkey

Know these common scam patterns so you can avoid them.

Transport

Taxi meter / long-route scam

Some taxi drivers, especially around airports and tourist zones, claim the meter is 'broken' and quote a flat inflated price, take a deliberately long scenic detour to run up the fare, or simply refuse to give correct change from a large banknote.

How to avoid it: Insist on the meter (taksimetre) being turned on before departure. Use ride-hailing apps like BiTaksi or Uber, which show the route and fare upfront. Only use official yellow taxis with clear licence plates/IDs. Carry small bills and count change before leaving the vehicle. Know the roughly expected fare in advance (opening fare ~₺72 + ~₺48/km).

Shopping

"It's closed — let me show you somewhere better" shop-steering scam

A friendly stranger (sometimes posing as a shoe-shiner who 'accidentally' drops a brush for you to return, sometimes as a helpful local) tells you an attraction, hotel, or shop is 'closed for renovation/a private event' and personally guides you to a carpet, leather or jewelry shop instead — a 'cousin's business' that pays the guide commission and pressures you into buying with complimentary tea and high-pressure sales tactics. The site was almost never actually closed.

How to avoid it: Politely but firmly decline unsolicited offers of help or guidance from strangers. Verify closures yourself (official website, or just walk up to the entrance). Never follow anyone to an unplanned 'family shop.' If you do end up in a carpet shop, you're under no obligation to buy after accepting tea — just leave.

Dining

Restaurant bill padding

Especially reported in Sultanahmet and Taksim: menus shown to tourists have no prices or a separate inflated 'tourist menu,' unrequested bread/nuts/appetizers appear and get added to the bill as if ordered, and final totals don't match what was verbally quoted — one analysis found average overcharges of ~15% in Taksim, with some bills inflated as much as 50%.

How to avoid it: Ask for a printed menu with prices before ordering and keep it at the table to cross-check the bill. Decline any food or drink brought to the table that you didn't order — say so immediately, don't wait for the bill. Photograph the menu and your order. Check the bill line by line before paying, and don't be intimidated into silence by a language barrier.

Money

Currency exchange short-changing & counterfeit bills

Unofficial or off-brand exchange booths in tourist areas advertise 'no commission' but use poor hidden rates, or short-change customers through sleight of hand when counting out unfamiliar lira notes. Separately, Turkey has seen a documented rise in counterfeit high-denomination USD/EUR notes, and some banks/exchanges now refuse $50/$100 bills for this reason.

How to avoid it: Exchange money at official döviz bürosu offices or withdraw lira directly from bank ATMs rather than street booths. Count every note out loud with the cashier before leaving the counter, especially with unfamiliar TRY denominations. Avoid carrying large foreign banknotes if possible; if you must, use a reputable bank branch to exchange them.

Nightlife

Fake-friendly local → overpriced bar scam

An overly friendly 'local' strikes up conversation and invites you for one drink at a normal, reasonably-priced bar to build trust, then suggests moving to a 'better' second venue — often down a side alley off İstiklal Avenue or near Taksim/Sultanahmet. There, unsolicited drinks and hostesses appear, your new 'friend' vanishes, and a bill for hundreds to thousands of dollars is presented, with large security staff blocking the exit until you pay.

How to avoid it: Be wary of strangers who are unusually quick to befriend you and suggest bars, especially near Taksim/İstiklal/Sultanahmet at night. Never let a new acquaintance choose where you drink, especially a 'second location.' Check prices are posted before ordering. If pressured to pay an inflated bill, contact the Tourism Police (Turizm Polisi) rather than paying under intimidation — they operate 24/7 specifically for this.
