Safety Guide

Most massage shops in Thailand are completely legitimate. But tourist areas also have a small number of shops that upsell unwanted "extra services" or demand extra cash after the session ends. A few signs can help you tell the two apart before you sit down.

Red Flags

•A dark interior with tinted or blacked-out windows.
•A "marketing girl" outside pressuring you to come in, or directly asking if you want a "special" massage.
•Staff in revealing clothing or heavy makeup rather than a proper uniform.
•Insistence on cash only, with no receipt offered.
•A demand for more money after the session ends — there are reported cases of a quoted ฿300 turning into a demanded ฿2,000.

Green Flags

•Visible therapist certification or license displayed in the shop.
•A clean space with fresh linens and sealed, unopened oil bottles.
•The therapist checks in on your pressure and pain tolerance during the massage.
•Session length, massage type, and total price confirmed in writing (or clearly shown) before the session starts, with no hidden add-ons.
