Transit card guide

Octopus is the card just about everyone in Hong Kong uses, and tourists can choose a cheap "Sold" version — the card fee itself isn't refundable, but any leftover balance is — or a slightly pricier "On-Loan" version that includes a small deposit reclaimable before you leave; both are sold at the airport's MTR service counters, MTR stations, and 7-Eleven. The MTR Tourist Day Pass gives unlimited rides for 24 hours, but it's only worth buying if you're planning an unusually transit-heavy single day, since most itineraries don't rack up enough separate rides to beat paying per trip with Octopus directly. One thing that catches visitors out: the Airport Express is a separate, noticeably pricier line than an ordinary MTR ride — Octopus works on it, but at the Airport Express fare, not the standard MTR fare — and even its own single-journey tickets quietly bake a small refundable deposit into the price, reclaimable at the line's service counters before you fly out.
