Book online, save on the gate price
Edinburgh's big paid sights charge more at the door: Edinburgh Castle is £23.50 online vs £26.00 at the gate, Holyrood Palace £22 vs £26, Royal Yacht Britannia £23 vs £25, and the Zoo runs about 10% cheaper online. The Castle can sell out in summer, so an advance ticket also protects your entry, and only the operator's own site avoids reseller markups.

Explorer Pass: only worth it if you leave Edinburgh
The Historic Scotland Explorer Pass is valid for 14 consecutive days and gives free entry to open Historic Environment Scotland sites, including Edinburgh, Stirling and Urquhart Castles, plus 20% off audio guides at Edinburgh and Stirling Castles. Edinburgh Castle alone costs £23.50 online, so compare the pass price against the sites you will really visit; you still need to book Edinburgh Castle online to guarantee entry.

2026 changes that catch visitors out
St Giles' Cathedral moved from donations to a £12 ticket from September 2026 (free for Scotland residents and under-16s). Dynamic Earth sells only a 12-month annual pass, with no day ticket, at £23 online. The Royal Botanic Garden's Palm Houses reopen on 2 October 2026 with timed tickets, while the rest of the glasshouses remain closed, and the Garden itself is free.
