The rechargeable Shanghai Public Transportation Card still works at every gate, but many riders now just scan a QR code through Alipay's transport section or the Metro Daduhui app after linking a passport-verified foreign card, and contactless foreign bank cards can also be tapped directly at the turnstiles. For a heavy sightseeing day, the 24-hour unlimited pass is worth considering — at a flat per-ride fare it tends to pay for itself after around five trips, though it doesn't cover the airport Maglev. As in Beijing, expect a bag X-ray scan at every station entrance, though enforcement is reportedly a little less consistent from station to station than in the capital.
