An 11-story stilted-architecture complex built into a cliff where the Jialing River meets the Yangtze, reconstructing Chongqing's traditional diaojiaolou stilt-house style at monumental scale. At night, tens of thousands of lights turn the tiered building into the city's single most-photographed sight, widely compared online to the bathhouse from Spirited Away. Multiple interlocking levels of restaurants, snack stalls, and gift shops mean you enter at the 11th floor from the clifftop and exit at river level.

China's first monorail station built directly into a residential tower: Line 2 trains run through floors 6-8 of a 19-story building, with living-room walls just 20cm from the passing carriages. Built together as a single structure in 2004 (not retrofitted), it went viral after 2016 and now draws a dedicated crowd to the free public viewing platform across the road, which frames the full moment of a train entering and exiting the building. Trains pass roughly every 2-8 minutes from about 6:30am to 11pm.

A Ming- and Qing-dynasty river port on the Jialing, once a major hub for shipping porcelain and other goods, now a warren of stone-paved lanes lined with teahouses, sichuan-opera face-changing shows, snack stalls, and craft shops. Known as 'a mini Chongqing' for packing the city's old riverside character into one walkable district. Genuinely large and crowded — most visitors budget half a day or more.

Chongqing's flagship museum, covering the Three Gorges region's history, the Bronze-Age Ba-Chu civilization, the WWII period when Chongqing served as China's wartime capital, and a large-scale simulation of the Three Gorges landscape before the dam raised water levels. Exhibits are well curated and free, which makes it one of the most popular indoor stops in the city.

A century-old classical garden atop one of the Yuzhong peninsula's highest points, built around a former warlord-era mansion. Its Kansheng Tower offers one of Chongqing's best panoramic views, taking in both the Yangtze and Jialing rivers and the layered skyline between them — a free, far-less-crowded alternative to the city's paid observation decks.

Opened in 1987 as a practical river crossing for commuters, this cable car over the Yangtze now runs almost entirely for tourists, gliding between Yuzhong District's Xinhua Road station and Nan'an District's Shangxinjie station in about 5 minutes. The ride delivers a sweeping view of the river and the stacked high-rises on both banks, and the Yuzhong-side terminal is a short walk from Jiefangbei — most visitors pair the two.

Chongqing's historic downtown core, centered on a 1947 monument commemorating victory in the war against Japan and, months later, Chongqing's liberation — hence 'Liberation Monument.' The surrounding streets became western China's first pedestrian shopping district in 1997 and remain the city's densest concentration of malls, department stores, and street food, especially along the nearby Ba Yi Road food street. It's also the natural hub for reaching both Hongyadong and the Yangtze River Cableway on foot.

A UNESCO World Heritage collection of Buddhist, Taoist, and Confucian rock carvings cut into cliff faces between the 9th and 13th centuries, spread across several sites in Dazu District. The centerpiece at Baodingshan is a 31-meter reclining Buddha depicting his entry into nirvana, alongside a gilded thousand-armed Guanyin statue that genuinely has over a thousand carved arms. It's a genuine day trip outside the city rather than an in-town stop, but is treated as a must-see by most multi-day Chongqing itineraries.

Closed: The outdoor carving sites (Baodingshan, Beishan) have no closed day, open daily 9:00-18:00 (last ticket 16:30). The adjacent Dazu Rock Carvings Museum is closed Mondays.
