Transit card guide

Beijing's rechargeable Yikatong card is still sold at station service windows for a refundable deposit, but scanning a QR code through the Yitongxing app or Alipay's transport feature after registering with a passport has become the more common way to ride, and since 2024 the gates also accept a direct tap from foreign contactless Visa, Mastercard, or JCB cards. An unlimited-ride pass exists inside the app, but it currently needs a mainland Chinese phone number to activate, so for a short visit paying per ride with a tapped card or a physical Yikatong is simpler than chasing a pass. One thing worth planning for: every station entrance has a mandatory bag X-ray scan, so build in a few extra minutes, especially at busy interchange stations.
